Course overview

These are the required courses a security guard must complete in order to receive a California Guard Registration Card (Guard Card). California law requires all security guards to be licensed through the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. The license is called a Guard Registration Card, or “Guard Card” for short.

Required Classes

These are the required courses a security guard must complete in order to receive a California Guard Registration Card (Guard Card). The license is called a Guard Registration Card, or “Guard Card” for short.


What you need to do

  • An 8 hour course that includes “Powers to Arrest” and “Weapons of Mass Destruction” must be completed before applying for a “Guard Card”.
  • 32 hours of continuing education must be completed within 6 months after your guard card is issued.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age in order to apply for a guard card.
  • The test at the end of the course is an open book, open notes, multiple choice test.

Timeline for required training

  • Part 1 – 8 hrs before you can work.
  • Part 2 – 16 hrs within 30 days.
  • Part 3 – 16 hrs within 6 months.
  • Total required by law – 40 hrs.

Note: Many employers will not hire you without all 40 hours.
